Vis is a small town and a harbour at the end of the bay of Vis, on the north-eastern coast of the central Dalmatian island of the same name, with nearly 2000 inhabitants. Chief occupations are farming, wine production, fishing and tourism.

The town of Vis is situated on the regional road. It has a ferry port with ferry connections between Split and both Vis and Komiza. The main settlements on the island, Vis and Komiza, are also connected by the asphalt road.

The antique Issa was built on the southern slope of Gradina, on the north-western edge of the cove. It was fortified by the wall, that is partly preserved. The remains of a Roman theatre have been excavated on the Pirova peninsula (a Franciscan monastery was later erected on the same location). The square (agora - forum) used to be by the sea to the east, and monumental thermae used to stand on the western end.

Issa was the first ancient town on the Croatian coast constructed following a regular urban pattern. The present settlement developed when two smaller villages, Luka and Kut, merged.

The older representative buildings are the renaissance Garibaldi Palace dating from the 16th and the summer villa of the Croatian poet Marin Gazarovic from the first half of the 17th century. There are also the houses Jaksa and the other of Vukasinovic-Dojmi with the collection of the archaeological finds from the antiquity. After the French defeat in 1811, Vis was occupied by the English who fortified it with several citadels (today only ruins).

The parish church of Our Lady of Spilica was erected around 1500. Kut has the church of St. Cyprian from the 16th century, reconstructed in 1742 in Baroque style. The church of the Holy Spirit from the 17th century lies in Luka.

Vis, an important stronghold of the antique period, where different cultures followed one another, is today a picturesque town offering a mixture of a modern seaside resort and the centuries-old past.

Apart from its rich cultural heritage, Vis is also known for its beautiful landscapes. The sand and gravel beaches are in the vicinity (Povja, Mala and Vela Svitnja, Rogacic, etc.), while the underwaters of Vis are rich in fish and have many splendid diving sites. In the island's interior, on the road towards the town of Komiza, there are many vineyards where grapes for Viska vugava, Plavac and white wines are grown.

Good quality accommodation in hotels or apartments, unpolluted environment with the crystal clear sea and marine scenery as well as the local specialities - seafood from the cleanest part of the Adriatic, various sports and recreation opportunities, music and other events organized during the summer season, they all constitute the offer of Vis.

This island emerged from a long period of isolation (tourists from abroad have been allowed to visit the island since 1989). Therefore, it is a great place for a quiet and pleasant holiday. South-west from the island of Vis is the island of BISEVO, famous of its Modra Spilja (the Blue Cave).
