Today Solin is the city situted in the fond of the Kastela bay, 5 km northeast of Split. Its urbanistic structure touches and confuses itself with the quarters of Split.

When looking it today from the aspect of its roads structure, industrial complex and vast agglomeration it is difficult to immagine that in the classical period on this territiries existed a great roman city, Salona, the Illyric centre, and after the administrative roman centre for Dalmatia.

The human gendre have already populated this area under the slopes of the Kozjak mountain in the long history. The river Jadro together with the mild coast of the Kastela bay are the reasonos of the permanent inhabitation of this region from the remote history up to today.

In the period of its great prosperity, at the end of III and at the beginning of the IV century, in the period of the emperor Diocleziano, it numbered approximately 60.000 inhabitants. In the cristian period becomes the dominant centre of the new religion, residence of the bishop, and from 418, ecclesiastical province of Dalmatia. The Barbarian attacks and Slavian definetly destroyed Salona between 614 and 630. The inhabitants abbandoned it and escaped in the vicinate Diocletian Palace.

Salona was never again renewed, and stayed as the biggest and important location non only in Croatia but also one bigger territory. Salona became one of the most important archeological locations, especially regarding the paleocristian archeology.

In the vast territory of the city it was studied and presented a big number of the urbanistical segments (forum, capitol, theatre, the remains of a temple, amphiteatre with the capacity of 20.000 spectators, Salona's thermal springs...) On the locality of Manastirine in Solin was burried the first martyr of Salona, its bishop Doimo (St Doimus, the protector of Split)
