Skradin is a town and port, in the hinterland of Dalmatia, 16 km North from Sibenik. This picturesque town lies on the right bank of a cataract where Krka calms down before descending into the sea. Chief occupations include farming, viticulture, vegetable growing and toursim. Upstrem, not far from Skradin a bridge spans over the Krka.

In Roman times Scardona was one of the three leading towns in the province of Illyricum, the main town of the Illyrian tribe Liburni. Antique Scardona was obviously an important centre since the bishop from Skradin was mentioned at the church council in Solin, in the 6th century already

During the Middle Ages it was one of the seats of the dukes Subic from Bribir. For almost a 150 years up to 1683 it was under Turkish rule. It later stagnated so that in 1828 its bishopric was annulled.

All of the church buildings in Skradin were built in the late Baroque period. Such is the parish church on the main square built on the space of an earlier Turkish mosque, as well as the Orthodox church of St. Spiridon.

Special festivities in Skradin represent the first Saturday in August when it hosts a gathering of the Dalmatian harmony-singing groups, also The Nativity of the Virgin Mary (8th September) is celebrated and the St. Jerome's Day (30th of September) when it commemorates the patron saint of Skradin. The well-maintained public beach, good-quality accomodation, famous specialities and wines make Skradin a destination of many tourists, particulatly nature enthusiasts and lovers of natural phenomena.
