Gornje Selo is an old village situated at the foot of the highest peak of the island and dominates with its appearance and location. Former village of farmers who made lime before, it is now the village of seamen and fishermen. The coves in the southern part that gravitate towards Gornje Selo are precious natural resources for development of tourism and also of mariculture. Gornje Selo is very attractive and it is a typical example of Mediterranean architecture. Not far away from today’s center of the village there is a locality Starine with the ruins of a fortification with two towers dating the old antiquity, that was probably the first center of the village. In the graveyard in Gornje Selo there is a grave with an inscription FOR TRAVELERS. It was made for every unknown traveler who dies on the island. Near the cemetery there is the highest peak of the island Vela straza (237) where a large crucifix was built that can be seen even from the Vis channel. There is a supermarket and a disco-bar in the village.
