Povlja is a village in the cove bearing the same name, on the north-eastern coast of the island Brac, 10 km east of Sumartin, a ferry port on the central Dalmatian island of Brac that is connected to the city of Makarska : from the ferry port Supetar: 40 km on the island's main road to Selca, where the road branches off for Povlja /by daily ferry lines. PovjaChief occupations are farming, growing of vines and olives, fishing and tourism.

Roman galleys used to be anchored in Povlja in ancient time. Several archeological sites from ancient times and medieval edifices can be found in Povlja. The remains from the early Christian period include parts of a basilica (5th-6th c.), which has been partly preserved up to the roof. The octagonal baptistery with a cupola, the only one preserved in Croatia is today an integral part of the parish church. The church also features partly preserved frescoes from the same period There is an inscription by Master Radovan chiseled on the lintel of the Benedictine church, dating back to 1250, known nowadays as Povaljska listina. Today, this valuable work of art, the oldest example of Western Cyrillic script in Croatia, is kept in the Archeological Museum in Split. There are also valuable ruins of a Benedictine monastery and tower

The place is surrounded by numerous bays featuring nice beaches, while there is a safe harbor in the place itself. If you would like to play sports while on holiday, there are many tennis courts and a soccer field at your disposal. We recommend water sports such as: sailing, surfing and diving. Due to fishing and locally grown food, your hospitable hosts will offer you tasty dishes. There ere some attractive places nearby like Supetar, Selca, Sumartin and Postira.
